CHAPTER 16

~ Jack ~

One day, I’d get the truth out of her. She was definitely deflecting. I was sure Alan knew the story. That both infuriated me and gave me peace. Something was going on with her, and I’d be a dick not to be appreciative of Alan.

The week was full of meetings, most off-site, so I didn’t get to see April as much as I wanted to. But it made me happy to be in the same office building. At least I got to see her in passing for the few moments I was there.

I closed my laptop, happy the week was over. Although business never stopped, there was something satisfying about closing my computer at a reasonable hour on Friday.

My cell phone buzzed, and my brother Dane’s name popped up. It’d been a while since I’d spoken to him, and I was surprised he hadn’t called immediately after Beverly met April.

I pushed the green phone icon. “Hey, Dane.”

“Hey. How they hangin’? I heard April’s back. Thanks for calling to let me know.”

Well, it didn’t take him long to dive right in. “Sorry about that. It’s been crazy around here. Did Beverly tell you?”

“No, Katie did. She told me she met the pretty girl from the picture. Of course, I had no idea who she was talking about.”

“Old habits…” I laughed, remembering Dane’s playboy ways when he couldn’t remember a woman’s name after he slept with her.

“You’re an asshole. Anyway, I’m coming into town. Drake called and asked when I planned on coming home. It sounded important, so I pulled out of the pro-am this weekend.”

I couldn’t wait to see Dane again. It’d been far too long. “I can send the plane for you.”

“Thanks, but I already booked commercial. Gretch might take you up on it, though. When I talked to her, she was looking for flights for her and Mason.”

Shit. Gretchen. “I’ll call her.”

“Does she know about April?”

“No, not yet.”

Dane let out a laugh. “She’s going to kick your ass for not telling her.”

“I’m her favorite. She’ll forgive me.”

“You keep telling yourself that.” Dane chuckled once more. “All right, brother, I need to go pack. I’ll see you on Sunday.”

“Have a safe flight.”

“Will do.”

I ended the call with Dane and called my sister. Once she gave me the riot act for not telling her about April, I tried to smooth things over by offering my jet, but she had just booked their flights. Instead, she wanted to see April. It didn’t matter that I said we were just friends, because that fueled her fire more. By the end of our conversation, I promised I’d ask April to join me. Gretchen squealed, and I was sure my eardrum was permanently damaged.

After I packed up my things and shut off my office light, I stepped out into the hall. Claire had just shut down her workspace. “Sir, did you need anything?”

“No, thank you. Have a great weekend.”

“Thank you. You as well.”

The light in April’s office filtered out of the narrow window on her door.
